Giving Is *Not* Better Than Receiving

December 21, 2021

As I scheduled my out-of-office message for the last two weeks of the year, I want to acknowledge the guilt that started to creep in.

Tell me if this sounds familiar. I thought:

  • What if I miss something?

  • I "should" be working.

  • I’m so damn privileged. It’s an embarrassment to take time off when there is so much suffering.

It feels powerful for me to tune into and acknowledge those messages, particularly in light of this year.

Looking back at 2020, I hosted 19 free (or $1) workshops, 18 programs, and led 4 group coaching communities.

In this moment, I recognize a deep desire to slow down, to receive and let myself to be supported by my family and the work I've done all year.

For the next two weeks, I won’t be meeting with clients or checking my email. I’ll be tuning into myself and how I want to show up in the world.

That’s a privilege. I can name that privilege and simultaneously strive to nourish myself and rest.

I want to go inward so I can begin the new year with fresh energy and perspective, ready to show up for racial justice, my community, and this democracy.

As you’re exploring what the rest of 2020 will look like for you, perhaps this note from my beloved teacher and friend, Dr. Chelsea Rae Verslues will resonate:

You are not meant to be “on” all the time.

In fact, where you’re at is another type of “on”...

You are ON and turned INward, not outward.

You are not a machine (you’re much better).

Giving is not better than receiving.

They are both equal and necessary and imperative for Fulfillment in Life.

So rest up and let the magic happen.

I love you, that’s all. 💕
