Squeee! My podcast interview with “The Only One In The Room”. 🎉
My first answer was no.
Ok, actually my first answer was “Yes, but definitely not right now.”
About a year ago, my friend Laura Cathcart Robbins asked me to be on her celebrated podcast, The Only One In The Room. (It's legit ranked in the top 1% of podcasts globally. NBD.)
This week, our conversation finally aired, and it's probably the best, most vulnerable interview I've ever given.
Back in August of 2021, Laura sent me a voice memo to check on me while I was evacuated during Hurricane Ida.
I mentioned that I felt deeply supported, in part because I’m polyamorous and both my current partners and beloved exes had been so attentive.
My relationship model came as a surprise to Laura (I honestly thought I’d already told her?🤷🏻♀️), but she was extremely supportive and invited me to be on the show.
I was honored she wanted to share my story on "The Only One in the Room," but I knew I wasn’t ready.
Before I could come out on a podcast that gets 55,000 weekly downloads, I had a lot more self-reflection to do.
So, today, I want to say thank you to you.
As a member of my newsletter community, you’ve been integral to my finding the confidence to share more publicly: in my recent Huffington Post article, keynote speeches, and now, on Laura’s podcast.
Whether you’ve been with me for years or just recently joined after seeing me speak, thank you.
I talk about y’all in the podcast, about the love fest — the effervescent flurry of support — you showered me with when I came out. I talk about how your reactions were a key part of my journey toward self-acceptance.
Thanks in part to y’all, Laura and I shared a beautiful, complex conversation that was among the most gratifying I've ever recorded.
There was a wild moment when Laura asked if I'd ever felt smug or like I was more evolved than my monogamous friends.
I liked my answer.
Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts on that moment or the podcast as a whole if you give it a listen!
Big hugs from NOLA,
Lelia
PS I had a quick but powerful follow-up chat with Scott Slaughter, Laura's boyfriend, co-host and producer.
He brought up such compelling questions about cheating and unethical non-monogomy, I think I'm gonna listen a second time.
